Hanger or Restaurant?

I felt like I had walked into an old school hanger and I was about to see a red tail (P-51 Mustang) or maybe even the Miss Mitchell (B-25 Bomber). That’s the gorgeous design of the latest restaurant we had the pleasure of visiting near, of all places, an airport. The MSP International to be exact and that restaurant was Hazelwood Food & Drink.

“Delicious and fresh, modern comfort food” is the first thing you see on their website and it immediately had me wanting to check it out. As I started to review the dishes on the menu, I knew right away it was a must try. I enjoyed the menu titles for their dishes like “Lettuce and Stuff” to describe their salads, “Bread and Stuff” for their sandwiches and “Two Hands” for their burgers. They also do woodfired pizzas, a rotisserie (that smelled amazing), pastas, steaks and seafood that is flown in 6 days a week to ensure absolute freshness. Yes, this is my kind of place – “Hunny, we’re going!”

I wanted to try everything on the menu, but I was craving a burger while my sweetie was craving something on the lighter side and a little healthier. As we were sat and greeted by our server, we immediately recognized her and started with great conversation. Stacey was her name and you should ask to be in her section, she’s awesome!

Ok, I suppose you want to know what we had for our first of many trips that we’ll have here? Well, I decided to go with the Stars & Stripes Burger, my sweetie went for the “I Just Want A Small Salad” and a bowl of the evening soup special – Shrimp and Corn Chowder and my little guy went for his own woodfired cheese pizza. Some bread and beverages made their way out to our table and I love restaurants that bring in Alaskan Brewery!

My little guys’ pizza was delicious and he certainly liked it. He wouldn’t stop eating it! My wife’s salad was a mix of cucumbers, carrots, grape tomatoes, Bermuda onions, croutons and pick your dressing: balsamic vinaigrette, buttermilk ranch, chipotle ranch, amablu, French, Russian, balsamic vinegar and olive oil. Definitely a filling looking salad, I wonder what their other salads look like? As for the chowder, that was awesome. Not my favorite, but very delicious and worth getting. But, this time, it was my burger that really stood out.
A perfectly cooked medium Iowa Black Angus burger with bacon jam, Tillamook cheddar, tomato, crispy onion strings, basil mayo and candied bacon. The first thing that caught my attention was the Tillamook cheddar. I had the opportunity to try this amazing cheese while out in Oregon and it’s insane. Then the basil mayo and bacon items just sealed the deal for me. This burger was a bust of insane flavors and I ate every last bite. It even made my top 10 list – I’m A Meateater! Didn’t you get a side? Oh, I did and it was the icing on the cake for this complete meal. Pass on the fries, cole slaw, cottage cheese or fruit (not because their bad), but because this is a must get!
Smoked Gouda Hashbrowns! Sounds simple, maybe even sounds ridiculous to order with a dinner dish, but man were these things amazing. This is a meal by itself and yes, you can order it alone as a side and should be enjoyed by every person on the planet. Seriously – so delish!

There you have it, out first visit and absolutely not our last. I have a feeling this is going to be one of our go-to restaurants and I’m okay with that.
